Psychology and Me
Despite being 30 years ago I remember my first day at University as if it were yesterday. It was both exhilarating and scary, mainly because I was going into a strange new environment unaware about how to survive academically. When I went to primary school my mum took me for the first few days. When I went to secondary school I went with boys and girls who lived in my neighbourhood.

But when you go to College or University you go on your lonesome own some!

You then find yourself in classrooms and lectures, which are usually mobbed (certainly in the first few weeks!) and a lecturer comes in and talks ten to the dozen about their subject. They are using words, phrases and concepts that you have never come across before. They are also referring to loads of books, and you think, 'How am I going to remember all this?'

You soon get the hint that its important to take down what they are saying. For a start the lecturer has read all the books! It becomes obvious that what they are telling you is crucial to the essays and exams soon to come. Taking notes essential to passing exams is difficult at first, as we have been spoon-fed by our schoolteachers up until then.

If there is a handout its usually rubbish, just bullet points or copies of the lecturers PowerPoint presentation. They are about as useful as a chocolate teapot; reason being the essential nitty-gritty detail is missing.

So what this section is about is How To Survive And Thrive At College And University. We hope it will be of some use.
